Fresh Spirulina contains a plethora of Photosynthetic phytonutrient color pigments including chlorophyll a, xanthophyll, beta- carotene, echinenone, myxoxanthophyll, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, diatoxanthin, 3-hydroxyechinenone, beta-cryptoxanthin, oscillaxanthin, plus the phycobiliproteins c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin.
Spirulina main photosynthetic pigment is phycocyanin, which is blue in colour. Spirulina also contains chlorophyll a and carotenoids. Some, including Raw Living Spirulina contain the pigment phycoerythrin, expressing visibly red or pink colors.
Phycoerythrin (PE) is a red protein-pigment complex from the light-harvesting phycobiliprotein family, present in red algae[1] and cryptophytes,[2] accessory to the main chlorophyll pigments responsible for photosynthesis.
