Dr. Brain Hetrich was referring to (AFA) Aphanizomenon flos aquae (Sold under the brand name E3Live) collected from the Klamath reservoir in Oregon.
This watershed is known for being very polluted with high levels of toxins form many species of inedible algae and microorganisms.
When E3Live harvests, it is impossible to only collect the AFA without collecting all the other dangerous species and pollutants.
So, in order to be allowed to sell these algae the FDA requires these companies to completely kill all the harvest. They do this through a high-speed centrifuge which ruptures all the cells of everything collected killing all the life. Centrifuges don’t remove toxins, they kill them by rupturing the cell structures. The toxins are still there, just dead.
It is not the algae AFA itself that is the problem, it is the surrounding other dangerous organisms and pollutants in the reservoir that contaminate these AFA algae.
After this processing, the liquid that is released from the cells together with the other dead liquid matter and reservoir water is frozen together for 6 months to 3 years in steel drums further reducing the toxic potential.
You cannot purchase fresh AFA from E3Live, even though the brand name suggests it is alive. Don’t be misled E3live is 100% dead and nowhere near fresh.
Spirulina is very different. It is a warm tropical alga that grows as a monoculture (only by itself) in high PH (10.3-10.5) waters. All commercial Spirulina is grown in controlled man-made environments and when grown correctly as we do, it is perfectly safe.
Spirulina is the only algae approved as safe by the FDA because it grows in such high pH water that no other species will survive. It is true mono aquaculture.

I really appreciate your posting this. I have been a consumer of the E3 live product and was considering purchasing again. I had no idea about the potential toxicities of the E3 live product. If I had not stumbled on to your post I would still be purchasing this product. Thanks for the warning! Maybe I will give your product a try.
